Protect Your Home

City Council - Charlie Brown, Dist. 6
Protect Your Home

Do Burglars view your home as a prime target?

Do you have sufficient lighting around your home? If you have a burglar alarm, do you use it? Are all of the bushes trimmed below window level and all trees trimmed so that the burglar is not hidden from view? Is your address easily seen from the street?

If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, please call your Community Resource Officer (CRO) at 720-913-1300 to have a free home security survey completed. The CRO will review your security measures and explain the areas where you could make your home more secure.

Important points to keep in mind when you are away from your home.

Do not leave messages that you are away on your voice mail.

Have a neighbor pick-up your newspaper and mail.

Call the local police station to let them know you are going away. The police will check your home until you return.

If you see suspicious activity, be sure to get good descriptions of the vehicles, people or the situation and call 720-913-2000 non-emergency or 911 emergency.

Protect Your Vehicle
City Council - Charlie Brown, Dist. 6
Protect Your Vehicle

Will your vehicle still be there when you get back?

Leaving a vehicle parked and running accounts for a large percentage of winter "Auto Thefts". It is also "Against the Law" to leave your vehicle running while unoccupied. You could receive a summons and many insurance companies will not cover auto thefts that occur when vehicles are left running and unoccupied.

Follow these simple steps and you can help us prevent vehicle and property theft in Denver.

Lock your vehicle and take the keys with you. Remember to lock the trunk, the hatchback or tailgate of a station wagon or sport utility vehicle.

Don't leave your motor vehicle registration, insurance policies, credit cards, or other important papers anywhere in your vehicle.

Never hide a second set of keys in your vehicle.

Periodically, check your license plates to make sure they haven't been stolen, switched, or altered.

Leave your valuables at home or keep them out of sight in your vehicle.

Burglary Prevention Tips

The District 3 Police have recently noted an increase in burglaries in Precinct 323 which includes the University, University Hills and Wellshire neighborhoods.

Tips to keep your home safe
  • Make your home look occupied, and difficult to break in.
  • If you have an alarm system and the alarm company gave you stickers or signs place them in a highly visible location
  • Lock all doors and windows before you leave the house. (Even if you will only be gone for a short time.)
  • Leave a few lights on when you go out.  Connect some lamps to automatic timers to turn lights on and off while you are on vacation.
  • have a neighbor pick up your mail and newspaper
  • Pushbutton locks are easy to open.  Install deadbolt locks on all your outside doors.
