How to Apply for a Certificate
Contractor Licensing in Denver is a two step process.  An applicant must hold a Supervisor Certificate or employ a Supervisor Certificate holder before applying for a Contractor License in a specific trade.  The type of work you will do determines your certificate and license requirements.  Categories listed below include Journeyman, Operator and Stationary Engineer Certificates. 
 
Denver does not accept or reciprocate contractor licenses and/or certifcates form other counties or states.  You must apply for a Denver license.

Steps to Apply for a Certificate

  1. Determine the type of Certificate that is applicable for your needs and read the standards and requirements for that type of Certificate. (see below) 
      •  Each type of certificate must be approved, tested for, and purchased separately.
  2. If you meet the minimum requirements, fill out the application completely.  Provide in detail the duties performed in any job that you are listing to meet the experience requirement on the application.     
      •   Please specify which specific Certificate you are applying for on your application form.  Illegible or otherwise incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  3. Please provide Notarized Letters from employers past or present (persons other than the applicant) verifying experience required for the Certificate. If self-employed, letters should be from other contractors who have hired you or clients/customers that hired you and can verify your experience.
          •  The letters submitted with the application should be in the following format: 
            •  Be on stationery with the company letterhead if a Company is verifying applicant’s experience. Must be Original Notarized Letters. 
            •  Have exact listing of duties, projects performed and/or equipment operated.
            • Have exact dates of employment (month & year started; month & year ended)
            •  Please submit the original application and original letters. Please make copies for your records prior to submitting your application and letters.
  4. Applicants are required to provide an Affidavit of Lawful Presence as proof that he or she is lawfully present in the United States and a secure and verifiable form of identification. You may elect to mail in your certificate application, with all required documents, or personally visit the agency to apply.  
            • Mailed certificate applications - please include both the affidavit and the copy of a secure and verifiable identification notarized.  
            • In-Person applicants – who sign the Affidavit at our office and present an original secure and verifiable identification, do not need to provide notarized copies.
            • Not the Applicant - Mail-in requirements apply to anyone bringing in documentation who is not the actual applicant.
  1. You will be notified of application approval or rejection by telephone within five (5) to seven (7) business days after the application has been processed. We can only give application status to the individual that applied.
  2. Approved Applications: After approval, the applicant must submit a copy of the official ICC pass letter after passing the exam. (if an exam is required) Certificate Purchase Fees for Journeyman, Operators, and Stationary Engineers are $40.00 and Certificate Purchase Fees for Supervisors are $60.00. If paying with check or money order make payable to “Manager of Finance”.
  3. Rejected Applications: In the event your application is not approved, you will be allowed to re-apply for a second time, however if your second application is rejected, then there is a six month waiting period until you are eligible to re-apply.
  4. After obtaining a Supervisor Certificate the Supervisor Certificate Holder or company he/she works for may then apply for a Contractor License. For further information regarding this process please contact our office or go onto our website
