The Report

The Report

In 2008, Denver Environmental Health (DEH) contracted with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), to complete a comprehensive assessment of Denver Animal Care & Control, and the Denver Municipal Animal Shelter.

Funded by donations and a grant from the Animal Assistance Foundation, the assessment was part of an overall improvement effort DEH began in 2007.

The four-day assessment originally took place in June. Preliminary findings were provided shortly after. These findings were presented to Animal Care & Control staff, and the City Council Greenprint Committee in September. This summary is provided below:

Summary of Preliminary findings

The final report was provided in January of 2009 and is provided below. As recommended by HSUS, a task force made up of professionals with animal welfare experience has been established to work with shelter staff to prioritize the recommendations.
