Shel Silverstein’s magical poem “The Place Where the Sidewalk Ends” describes the mystery of following a sidewalk, not knowing exactly where it will lead but believing that there will always be something to see just around the corner. Sidewalks let us explore our city affording sights we might miss while driving down a street. But for residents who walk daily to a park, a store, a school or a bus stop, sidewalks are part of our transportation system. The only mystery is why they are in poor condition or don’t connect.
