Downtown Multimodal Access Plan

Background
As Downtown Denver continues to grow and change, the transportation system must also grow and change. To ensure this evolution is timely, efficient and cost effective, the City and County of Denver (CCD), the Regional Transportation District (RTD), and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) initiated the Downtown Multimodal Access Plan (DMAP).

The main goal of DMAP is a detailed, integrated plan for vehicular, freight, pedestrian, bicycle, and transit access into and throughout Downtown Denver. Additionally, the plan will consider the relationship between long-term land use planning, infrastructure improvements, and streetscape urban design elements needed to ensure quality multimodal connections within Downtown and with the immediately adjacent neighborhoods.

The project's main focus of the initial work effort was twofold:

  1. To develop specific recommendations for a Downtown Transit Circulator System that will be part of RTD's FasTracks plan.
  2. To develop a Downtown Streetscape Plan that enhances the pedestrian environment and maps the required design treatment for any right-of-way improvements within the Downtown.
All of the recommendations were then documented in a final DMAP document(click on image at left) which will be formally approved by the Denver City Council, the RTD Board, and CDOT's Transportation Commission.
