Denver Public Works celebrates employees, commitment to City during National Public Works Week

Denver Public Works will honor over 1,100 employees this week during National Public Works Week, an event sponsored by the American Public Works Association. Around the country, National Public Works Week will be celebrated May 19-25 with the theme “Because of Public Works,” highlighting the quality of life brought to citizens because of the work performed every day by Public Works employees.

Public Works Week is an opportunity to recognize all of the dedicated employees who maintain and enhance the Mile High City through their work. Denver Public Works improves the quality of life in Denver by managing and maintaining streets, alleys, drainage ways, sewers, bridges, traffic signals, street markings and signage, parking, trash and recycling collection, and public infrastructure.

Below is a list of a few of the things that happen in Denver because of Public Works:

  • 167,000 households receive trash collection and 112,000 home receive recycling collection at no extra charge
  • 6,150 lane miles of streets and 5,135 alleys are maintained and repaired throughout the year
  • 2,200 miles of sanitary and storm sewer systems are cleaned and maintained every year
  • Traffic signals, pavement markings, bike facilities are installed and improved on a daily basis
  • Public infrastructure and multi-modal transportation options are planned, designed, and constructed

“Each day, Denver Public Works employees go above and beyond their job responsibilities to provide excellent customer service to Denver residents,” said Manager of Denver Public Works Jose Cornejo. “Our employees have been known to return lost wallets, assist in cases of theft, help rescue lost pets, and even save lives.”

This week, thank a Denver Public Works employee for helping to make Denver a world class city. Follow @DenPublicWorks on twitter for helpful tips and facts about the department.
