What is GIS?

A geographic information system is a collection of hardware, software, and personnel that develop, analyze, and manage spatial and tabular geographic information databases.  Geographic information depicts the location of features and activities and includes descriptive information about a location.  This information can be used to understand the interrelationship between locations and activities and is invaluable for making decisions.  It is important to realize that the GIS should be used for research and design, it is not a legal document; legal documents are filed at the Clerk and Recorder's office.
