2012 Goals
Denver Latino Commission
1. Public Policy
- Monitor legislation and make recommendations to the Mayor
- Provide forums/outreach on public policy issues in partnership with other Latino-serving community organizations
- Develop process to obtain feedback from the community at-large
- Provide feedback to critical partners to garner support on public policy issues
- Enhance positive working relationships with state and local officials and encourage open dialogue about issues impacting Latinos.
2. Economic Development
- Positively impact local contracting policies that affect minority-owned businesses
- Positively influence policies for vendors who contract with the City and encourage the hiring of minority workers
3. Health Disparities
- Support Colorado's Winnable Battle to decrease obesity among Latinos
- Support Colorado's Winnable Battle to decrease unintended pregnancy among Latinos
4. Public Safety
- Address issues identified by community members in 2011 town hall meetings
- Make recommendations to the Mayor on the hiring process and community invovement in the selection of a new Independent Monitor. Read the Commission Letter Here
- Meet with the Chief of Police, Independent Monitor and manager of Safety once per year
- Facilitate on-going communication between the community and law enforcement
5. Dialogue between Latino and African American Communities
- Begin to explore divisions between Denvers Latino and African American Communities
- Work with the Denver African American Commission jointly on this goal
