Community Members to Restore Memorial Peace Garden and
Distribute Summer of Peace/Verano de Paz Yard Signs
DENVER—Mayor John Hickenlooper will join City Councilwoman Judy Montero, community members and the Metro Denver Gang Coalition in a Summer of Peace garden restoration project on Saturday, June 2, 2007, 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Troy Chavez Memorial Peace Garden, 3825 Shoshone St. Summer of Peace/Verano de Paz yard signs will be sold for $5 to residents and businesses that wish to display support for a violence-free summer. Proceeds will fund gang prevention and intervention programs across the Denver metropolitan area.
Additional volunteers are welcome to help clean the Troy Chavez Memorial Peace Garden and plant flowers and other greenery. Troy Chavez was a victim of violence in 1993. The Troy Chavez Memorial Peace Garden was formed by community members and his mother, Ana Chavez, to celebrate his life and be a symbol for peace.
The Summer of Peace campaign includes a series of public events—including the garden restoration on Saturday—and targeted efforts to prevent violence and channel Denver-area youth into positive summer activities. The campaign’s organizers include the Chicano Caucus, the PeaceJam Foundation, and the Metro Denver Gang Coalition, as well as Hickenlooper and members of City Council.
