DENVER ENCOURAGES NATIONAL NIGHT OUT CELEBRATIONS
TO HEIGHTEN CRIME PREVENTION AWARENESS

Permit fees will be waived for neighborhood block parties Tuesday, Aug. 5

(DENVER) On Tuesday, August 5th, 2008, Denver neighborhoods will join communities nationwide for the “25th Annual National Night Out” (NNO) to celebrate the role of citizens and neighborhoods in preventing crime. This year, for the first time, Denver will waive its street closure permit fee to encourage neighborhoods to host block parties, cookouts, parades, youth activities or other events.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime- and drug-prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and alert would-be criminals that Denver’s neighborhoods are organized against crime.

“The strength of our neighborhoods – and the close partnerships they have with our police department and our city agencies – are the reasons Denver has experienced double-digit crime reductions for the past two years,” Mayor Hickenlooper said. “National Night Out celebrates these partnerships and reminds us how important they are.”

Crime in Denver continued to fall in 2007, dropping 11.5 percent following a similar decrease the previous year, according to data released last month by the Denver Department of Safety.

2008 marks the first time, the City and County of Denver’s Department of Public Works Development Engineering Services is waiving the street closure permit fee in support of National Night Out. This step will allow neighborhoods to save money while hosting a fun and safe event. Event organizers will still need to apply for permits and to provide barricades where required. Barricades may be rented by a variety of vendors around the city.

For more information visit www.nationaltownwatch.org or for permit information call Davis B. Adams in Denver Public Works at (303)446-3779. The permit information desk is located in the Wastewater Management Building at 2000 W. Third Ave, Denver. Additionally, the Neighborhood Resource Center of Colorado is providing events with donated items and coupons. Interested organizers can call (303) 477-0023 to apply for items to enhance their National Night Out event.
