Mayor Hickenlooper Unveils One Book, One Denver Title

John Nichols' The Milagro Beanfield War is the 2006 selection

(DENVER) Mayor John Hickenlooper and the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs announced today that The Milagro Beanfield War by John Nichols is the 2006 One Book, One Denver selection. The choice was unveiled at a news conference at the Denver Public Library’s Central Branch.

One Book, One Denver cultivates a culture of reading and discussion throughout the greater Denver metro area. A series of community events are scheduled through December.

“The vision of One Book, One Denver – now in its third year – is to not only promote the reading of great literature and the introspection that inspires, but to also strengthen our connectivity through a shared community experience and dialogue,” said Mayor Hickenlooper. “John Nichols has weaved a timeless, comic and compassionate take in The Milagro Beanfield War that I expect will engage our community in stimulating conversation and discourse.”

The Milagro Beanfield War was selected by Mayor Hickenlooper with recommendations from the literary and education communities and from One Book, One Denver project partners. Criteria for book selection include that the book be a work of fiction, available in paperback and engaging for both high school and adult readers. In addition, the book must be written by a living author who is willing to participate in community activities.

Published in 1974, The Milagro Beanfield War has grown from regional stature to national appeal and considered a classic by many.

“I am thrilled that The Milagro Beanfield War has been selected for One Book, One Denver,” said author John Nichols. “For years I think my novel has been a call to social conscience and community activism. In that role I trust Milagro has encouraged all underdogs, whatever their stripe, gender or ethnicity. Cloaked in a ribald sense of humor, yet also deadly serious, Milagro should be a great example of the hope and chutzpah we all need to struggle through difficult times while working for a better world. Let us always remember that laughter is the best medicine…and often the best weapon also.”

Copies of The Milagro Beanfield War are available at all Denver Public Library branches and most other Denver metro libraries. Local bookstores including Borders, Tattered Cover, and Cultural Legacy have copies available for purchase. Resource guides are also available. Pick up a copy of the resource guide at any Denver Public Library location or local bookstore, or download the information from www.denvergov.org/onebook.

Scheduled events for One Book, One Denver include a public reading by The Milagro Beanfield War author John Nichols on November 13, numerous book discussions through December, dramatic readings, workshops, and more. Please visit www.denvergov.org/onebook for a complete schedule of events.

The mission of the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs is to advance the arts and culture in the City and County of Denver.
