St. Anthony Central Community Advisory Task Force Announced
(DENVER) Mayor John Hickenlooper, District 1 Councilman Rick Garcia, and St. Anthony Hospitals CEO George Zara announced Wednesday the creation of a joint task force to explore redevelopment options for the St. Anthony Central campus, currently located on 16 acres near Colfax Avenue and Raleigh Street in northwest Denver. In March 2005, Centura Health and Catholic Health Initiatives announced it would pursue replacement and relocation of the St. Anthony Central campus.

“While we obviously wished that St. Anthony Central could remain within the Denver city limits, we understand the constraints its current campus places on the hospital’s ability to grow in the future,” Mayor John Hickenlooper said. “This task force is the first step in our proactive efforts, working with St. Anthony and the west Denver community, to ensure the site becomes a positive economic engine for the West Colfax corridor and surrounding areas.”

The St. Anthony Central Community Advisory Task Force, composed of neighborhood representatives, city officials; hospital, business and real estate development representatives, will help identify opportunities and strategies to address the conversion and transformation of the current facility into a state-of-the-art community redevelopment complex that will improve the overall health, well-being and economic vitality of the surrounding neighborhoods.

“The potential reuse of this site provides a significant economic and social change opportunity for the West Colfax area,” said Councilman Rick Garcia, whose district includes the site. “The St. Anthony Central Hospital infill redevelopment is as big for northwest Denver as the Stapleton and Lowry projects have been for east Denver. I along with many northwest Denver residents are very pleased with the commitment the Mayor has made toward a community process to guide the future use.”

"We are pleased to be able to join with these leaders to explore redevelopment options that will enrich and serve the community," said George Zara, President and CEO of St. Anthony Hospitals. "For more than a century, St. Anthony Central has felt a deep responsibility to contribute to the well-being and vitality of our West Colfax neighborhood. Our commitment to that remains."
