The Director of National Drug Control Policy, Gil Kerlikowske, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and staff from the Denver Office of Drug Strategy today will recognize Comcast Denver, Gannet Broadcasting and Fox 31 for their help in raising awareness about being drug-free. The media companies will be recognized during an awards reception at 5:30 p.m. in the Parr-Widener Community Room at the City and County Building.
The Partnership for a Drug-Free America awarded Denver with an Affiliate/Alliance Achievement Award earlier this year, which was in large part awarded thanks to the support of these local media affiliates.
“I applaud the local leaders and partnering media professionals in Denver for their commitment to educating parents and youth about the risks of drug abuse,” said Kerlikowske. “These partnerships create opportunities to capitalize on the knowledge, resources and relationships that exist within communities to prevent drug abuse in youth before it starts.”
Over the past year, Comcast Denver aired more than 18,000 public service announcements (PSA) and Gannet Broadcasting and Fox 31 each aired more than 1,800 spots. The PSAs reached 95 percent of Denver residents and 90 percent of Coloradans.
“These media companies have been great partners in helping us raise awareness about resources available to help treat and reduce substance use and abuse in our community,” said Hickenlooper. “Denver is honored that our comprehensive drug strategy puts forth a strategic vision for prevention, intervention and treatment that serves as a model to help shape national policy.”
The Denver Office of Drug Strategy’s comprehensive strategic plan is dedicated to the prevention, education, treatment, research and evaluation of substance abuse in Denver. The successful implementation of the plan is attributed to multiple community partners, along with Denver Office of Drug Strategy staff.
