Mayor Hickenlooper, Denver Fire announce agreement

Mayor John Hickenlooper, Denver Fire Chief Nick Nuanes and International Association of Firefighters Local 858 President Patrick Rhoades today announced a tentative agreement to help balance the City’s 2010 budget.

Denver Firefighters Local 858 leaders have given initial approval to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to alter their contract with the City to create a general fund savings of $3.2 million – an amount equal to a wage increase for firefighters scheduled for next year. Union membership is expected to vote on the agreement in early September. Details of the agreement will be released after the union vote.

“Denver Firefighters Local 858 has once again stepped up and helped the City deal with the current fiscal crisis,” Mayor John Hickenlooper said. “We appreciate the union’s efforts to partner with the City in finding ways to cut $120 million from the budget. This agreement will help us avoid layoffs among firefighters. We recognize the hardship this agreement may put on firefighters and their families, and we are grateful for the public service firefighters provide to our community.”

“On behalf of City Council, I want to extend our gratitude to the Denver Firefighters Local 858 leadership for their assistance during this tough economic time,” City Council President Jeanne Robb said. “We place great value in our partnership with firefighters and appreciate their work to make Denver the safest city possible.”

“Last night, we reached a tentative agreement with the Mayor to address the financial needs of the city. While it comes at great personal sacrifice to the firefighters this agreement will continue to provide the highest level of fire safety for the residents of the City of Denver by preventing firefighters from being laid off,” said Pat Rhoades, president of Denver Firefighters Local 858. “Denver firefighters have always been active members of their community and once again I believe they will step up to make sure that all of the fire houses and fire apparatus remain open.  Denver firefighters believe strongly that public safety should never be jeopardized and our sacrifices once again prove that we are always there when you need us.”

“I am extremely proud of both the extraordinary consideration of Denver Firefighters Local 858 and its leadership and the diligent efforts of Mayor John Hickenlooper’s administration in crafting an agreement which will provide relief to the City and County of Denver in these difficult times,” said Fire Chief Nick Nuanes. “This Union has a long and illustrious history of being one large extended family to the City and County of Denver and, once again, will be asked to vote to show their continuing support of that community.  I believe that by working together to face the needs of today, we can better prepare to face the needs of the future.”

Mayor Hickenlooper will deliver the 2010 budget to the City Council on Sept. 15.
