Denver honors Colorado Avalanche legend Joe Sakic

Mayor announces “Joe Sakic Way” in honor of Colorado Avalanche forward

Mayor John Hickenlooper announced today 19th Street in downtown Denver will be named “Joe Sakic Way” beginning Oct. 1 in honor of the renowned Colorado Avalanche forward.

“Joe Sakic Way” will replace 19th Street at Market Street through Oct. 19. The number 19 is significant because it’s the jersey number Sakic wore while playing hockey for the Colorado Avalanche before he retired earlier this year.

“Joe Sakic is one of the greatest hockey players of all time,” Mayor John Hickenlooper said. “Joe’s contributions to the Avalanche and to our community through his work with Food Bank of the Rockies and other charities make him a true hometown hero.”

Earlier today, Gov. Bill Ritter proclaimed Oct. 1, 2009, “Joe Sakic Day” throughout Colorado.

Denver Public Works Traffic Engineering Services will officially replace the 19th Street sign with “Joe Sakic Way” at the corner of 19th and Market streets at 9:19 a.m. Oct. 1. Sakic will be honored by the Colorado Avalanche later that day during the team’s first home game of the season.

Mayor Hickenlooper presented Sakic with a smaller version of the street sign earlier today.
