Mayor Hancock’s Statement on Teach For America Week

DENVER – Mayor Michael B. Hancock today issued the following statement honoring the dedicated Teach For America teachers during Teach For America Week.

“I’m honored to participate in Teach For America Week helping to raise awareness about the widening achievement gap in our schools. Equal access to a world-class education should not be a privilege but rather a fundamental right for all our children.

“Too often a child’s zip code determines the quality of their school and this inequity hinders our students’ ability to flourish academically. By placing the best teachers in classrooms across Denver, Teach For America teachers are standing in the gap by helping to create educational opportunities for all students living in poverty.

“I applaud these teachers who work tirelessly to foster a culture of excellence in some of Denver’s most challenging schools. Their work to shape the next generation is changing the fabric of our community for the better and helping to deliver a world-class city where everyone matters.”
