Today, as we bid farewell to 2012 and embark on 2013, I could not be more proud to stand side-by-side with you as your Mayor.

First, I want to thank you for supporting Measure 2A. You have entrusted us with this mandate, and we vow to be responsible and transparent with every one of your tax dollars.

Denver has made great strides to come out of this recession prepared to stand on the global stage, while looking out on a future that is bright and full of promise.

Throughout the year, we have remained focused on delivering to our residents the great quality of life they expect and deserve by:

  • Driving economic development with new international flights, a new patent and trademark office and more support for our small businesses and start-ups through Peak Enterprise;
  • Improving the city’s customer service, identifying cost savings and becoming more effective and efficient through Peak Performance;
  • Providing our children and most vulnerable with the resources they need through the Children’s Cabinet, Denver Education Compact, MyDenver Card and other improved support services; and
  • Fostering a strong relationship between our residents and our police department by streamlining processes and getting more officers out from behind desks and onto the street.

With our triumphs – including hosting the first Presidential Debate – we have also faced tragedies.

From our own fallen Officer Celena Hollis to the innocents in Aurora and Connecticut, we mourn together. And together, we will endure – and with time – heal and overcome.

Denver – we stand strong today and can look forward to a future brimming with possibilities because of our Denver spirit, our never satisfied, always striving to realize new possibilities, attitude. Our job market is growing, housing prices are rising and there may even be a Super Bowl on the horizon!

While we have many reasons to be optimistic, I also know many of our families are still struggling, and that means we have a lot of hard work ahead of us.

For 2013, may we continue to come together to make Denver the best place to live, work and play, to serve those who may need a hand up, to strengthen our neighborhoods and to deliver a city that our children and children’s children can be proud of.

May you and your family enjoy health, peace and prosperity.

Happy New Year!
