Denver And Saint Paul Begin Tale Of Two Cities As Convention Arenas Host Nhl Stanley Cup Playoffs
Mayors Place Friendly Wager on Colorado Avalanche vs. Minnesota Wild Series
(Denver) 2008 is the year for Denver and Saint Paul to face off… starting with the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs pitting the Colorado Avalanche against the Minnesota Wild.
The series began last night with an overtime win for the Avs at the Saint Paul Xcel Energy Center and will come to Denver’s Pepsi Center next week. The two arenas also will host the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention, respectively, later this year.
Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman have placed a friendly wager on the series, betting environmental “green” instead of green cash! Mayor Coleman will plant a Colorado Blue Spruce in front of the Xcel Energy Center prior to the Republican National Convention wearing a Colorado Avalanche jersey when the Avs bury the Wild. Should the Avs succumb to the call of the wild, Mayor Hickenlooper has agreed to plant a Minnesota native Northwoods Red Maple in front of the Pepsi Center prior to the DNC.
“We know our two-time Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche will have no problems triggering a landslide over the Wild, but if necessary, we would be honored to plant a Northwoods Red Maple in front of the Pepsi Center before we host the greenest convention ever this August,” said Mayor Hickenlooper. “Tree planting is a major part of our Greenprint Denver sustainability efforts and goes hand in hand with our goal of putting on an environmentally friendly convention. Planting a tree would be a pleasure – it’s wearing a Wild jersey that would be hard!”
“If Colorado thinks the Avs are going to find the Stanley Cup by going through Saint Paul, they are ‘barking up the wrong tree,’” Mayor Coleman said. “Our championship roots run deep in the State of Hockey, and when the Wild win the series, we will be more than happy to share a little of our state with the wonderful hockey fans and Mayor Hickenlooper in Denver. If the unthinkable happens, I will add an Avs jersey to my collection and will honor our commitment to the environment – and our wagers – by planting a Colorado Blue Spruce in downtown Saint Paul.”
