Mayor Hickenlooper Appoints Juanita Chacon to RTD Board of Directors
(DENVER) Mayor John Hickenlooper officially announced Wednesday his appointment of Juanita Chacon to the Regional Transportation District (RTD) Board of Directors, filling the District C position recently vacated by Lori Fox. The City of Denver is responsible for naming a replacement to serve out the one-and a-half years remaining on Fox’s term. District C includes northwest Denver and parts of eastern Jefferson and southern Adams Counties.
“Given the increasing interconnectedness between land use and transportation, Juanita’s real estate expertise will be a tremendous asset to the RTD Board,” said Hickenlooper. “Her longstanding record of community involvement and her enthusiastic desire to make a difference will serve her well in this new role.”
Currently a realtor with Remax Alliance Central, Chacon has worked in the real estate industry for over 20 years and has previously earned the awards of Hispanic Realtor of the Year and Denver Hispanic Chamber Businesswoman of the Year.
In 1990, former Mayor Federico Peña appointed Chacon to the Denver Urban Renewal Authority (DURA) board and former Governor Roy Romer appointed her to the State Housing Board, where served two terms, including two years as chair. In 2003, Chacon volunteered as treasurer of the Hickenlooper for Mayor campaign and was the volunteer co-chair of Hickenlooper’s public safety transition committee.
A resident of northwest Denver, Chacon is actively engaged in community issues. She currently serves on the board of the Latina Chamber of Commerce (which she co-founded), the Community Corrections Board, the Mayor’s Latino Advisory Council and chairs the board of Family Star. She is a former chairperson of the Colorado Children's Campaign, the Latin American Research and Service Agency, and College Path, and has served on over twenty additional boards and commissions focusing on education, housing and other community issues.
The Mayor’s Office has submitted Chacon’s appointment to Denver City Council, who will vote on her nomination over the next few weeks.
Fox announced her resignation from the RTD Board of Directors in late May 2005, attributing the decision to an increase in job and travel responsibilities making it difficult to fulfill her Board-related duties. Fox was elected to the RTD Board in November 2002.
