firstname.lastname@example.orgMayor Hickenlooper Launches Cultural Activities Program for Head Start Children Age Five and Under
(DENVER) Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper officially launched on Tuesday the City’s latest early childhood education initiative. The 5 By 5 Project introduces young children in Denver’s Head Start program to arts, culture and play as a way to spark imagination and stimulate creativity and learning.
“Given the right mix of learning and cultural experiences, every child, regardless of family income, has the potential to do great things in life,” Hickenlooper said. “The City of Denver is committed to unleashing that potential through our creation of the 5 By 5 Project.”
Research shows that providing children with extended learning through cultural stimuli and active play broadens their skills. The 2,000 families in Denver’s Head Start program will receive a passbook providing them free admission to 10 cultural attractions where they can engage in hands-on learning and artistic activities.
“Denver has a wealth of cultural assets that can and should be leveraged to help all of our children, and particularly those in the Head Start program, broaden their horizons,” said Hickenlooper. “Thanks to our cultural partners and the program’s sponsors, Denver’s cultural attractions are even more accessible to children and families in the Head Start program.”
By offering five cultural experiences by the age of five, the program’s goals are to strengthen family experiences and enhance school readiness.
The 5 By 5 Project was made possible through generous in-kind and financial support from Denver’s cultural partners and corporate sponsors.
Cultural partners include: The Children’s Museum of Denver, Colorado Ballet, Denver Art Museum, Denver Botanic Gardens, The Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Denver Public Library, Denver Zoo, Denver Department of Parks & Recreation, and Ocean Journey Aquarium.
Sponsors include: City & County of Denver, MGA Communications, 1STBank, Regional Transportation District (RTD), and Scientific & Cultural Facilities District (SCFD).
The 5 By 5 Project is a program of the Mayor’s Office for Education and Children and builds on Mayor Hickenlooper’s Invest in Success initiative for early childhood education. More information on these initiatives and Head Start is available at www.denvergov.org/education.
