Mayor Hickenlooper Forms Aviation Working Group

(DENVER) Mayor John Hickenlooper released details Thursday about the formation of an aviation working group that will be charged with reviewing various management models from other airports, comparing those to present operations at Denver International Airport, and assessing the regional impact and role of DIA in land use, economic development and environmental issues. The group will also analyze issues related to the status of the airline industry to ensure DIA’s ongoing economic viability.

“J.D. Powers named DIA the number one airport in the country – and number two in the world – in terms of customer satisfaction this year,” Hickenlooper said. “Low cost carriers are growing faster at DIA than at any other of the nation’s major airports, and DIA is the only major airport in the country to see a decline in average air fares for nine consecutive quarters. Clearly the management team, employees and airlines are doing a tremendous job, but if there are ways to do things even better – we not only want to know about them, but we want to involve our regional partners in the conversation.”

During Hickenlooper’s comprehensive transition process last year, the aviation transition committee recommended the administration convene a study group to review the organizational structure at DIA and examine approaches to airport management based on the experience of similar airports around the country.

The Working Group will meet at least once a month for up to six months, with its first meeting on October 20.

The group is a diverse mix of economic development and business professionals, regional elected officials, airline representatives, airport and aviation experts.
