27 choices, classic & contemporary works, diverse themes & authors
One Book, One Denver is changing this year. It’s the public’s turn to pick the book. Instead of Mayor John Hickenlooper selecting the book, as he has done each of the past five years, citizens will have the opportunity to vote on their choice of 27 books. Books include classic and contemporary works, with diverse themes and authors.
Voting will begin June 1 and end June 15 at www.OneBookOneVote.org
. The public can use this Web site to read a summary of each book, hear the first one or two paragraphs of each book read by our own Denver Poet Laureate, Chris Ransick, learn about the authors and VOTE! All that is needed is an e-mail address.
Once voting ends and the winning book is determined, the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs will begin planning the 2009 One Book, One Denver program for a Sept. 1 launch. On that date, Mayor Hickenlooper will announce the winning book at a news conference and the associated FREE and FUN programming that will carry through October.
One Book, One Denver is a citywide book club. The goal of the program is to cultivate a culture of reading in Denver, with objectives to build community and stimulate people to read. The program invites Denver citizens, young and old, to join others in the shared experience of simultaneously reading the same book and participating in related events.
