Jim Sestrich Is New Denver Fire Chief
Mayor John Hickenlooper announced today Jim Sestrich is the new fire Chief in Denver. Sestrich replaces Nick Nuanes, who retired effective Sept. 15.
Sestrich joined the Denver Fire Department in July 1976 and has held numerous positions. He previously served at interim Chief after Larry Trujillo retired in August 2007 and before Nick Nuanes was hired as Chief.
“Jim brings with him a long career of distinguished service to our community,” Hickenlooper said. “He is a fireman’s firefighter and has a genuine passion for the job.”
Sestrich started his career as a firefighter stationed at Engine Company 8. He later worked as a lieutenant, captain, assistant chief, division chief and deputy chief. Sestrich was selected eight times to attend the National Fire Academy for specialized training.
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to lead this great Department and to continue working with the firefighters who have made it the class Department that it is,” Sestrich said. “Although it will be very challenging during these difficult budget times, Denver firefighters will step up as always, and we will continue to provide the best possible service to the citizens and visitors of Denver.”
Sestrich was sworn in today.
