|Mayor Hancock celebrates new solar array at airport
Mayor Michael B. Hancock today joined Gov. John Hickenlooper and former Gov. Bill Ritter in celebrating the completion of a 4.4 megawatt solar array at Denver International Airport.
The new solar array built by Constellation Energy is the third large-scale solar project for DIA and will produce a total of eight megawatts of power, the most of any airport in the nation. The three systems will collectively supply six percent of the airport’s total energy requirements.
“This installation is a great example of where Denver is headed as a 21st century city,” Mayor Hancock said. “DIA was envisioned, designed and built to be sustainable and green. With the leadership of Kim Day and her team, the airport has consistently worked for increased environmental responsibility through these innovative efforts.”
The new installation also bolsters the City of Denver’s continuous efforts to increase energy efficiency and grow its energy economy. Denver was recently ranked the 4th greenest large city in the country by Siemens and the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Solar arrays have also been installed on government buildings throughout the City, including the Convention Center and Museum of Nature and Science. The City is currently working with Denver Water to reduce water consumption through neighborhood-by-neighborhood engagement.
