Denver City government to close for furlough day, President’s Day

DENVER – Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011 – Most City and County of Denver offices will close Friday and Monday, February 18 and 21, for a previously announced, budget-required furlough day for City employees and in observance of President’s Day, respectively.

Friday is the first of five planned furlough days this year. The furlough days were suggested by many employees as a way to save money during a time of historic revenue decline. Each furlough day saves approximately $1 million for the general fund.

As a result of the budget-required furlough and holiday, the Mayor’s Office, City Council offices, the Auditor’s Office, recreation centers and most city agencies will be closed on Friday and Monday. Partner entities such as Denver Health and the Denver Zoo will remain open both Friday and Monday, as will agencies that operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, such as Denver International Airport. Sworn members of the Denver Sheriff, Police and Fire departments will report for duty Friday as well.
