Mayor Hancock Announces Withdrawal from RTA

DENVER Mayor Michael B. Hancock announced today the City and County of Denver has withdrawn from the Regional Tourism Act application the City and Aurora submitted to the State earlier this year.

“Over the last several months, as we have worked with our partners at the Stock Show and listened to all interested stakeholders, it has become clear it is not in Denver’s best interest to remain a co-applicant,” Mayor Hancock said. “We respect and appreciate Aurora’s hard work on this application and have ensured our withdrawal has no negative impact on Aurora’s independent application moving forward.”

Denver submitted two letters notifying the City of Aurora and the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade of the decision. By withdrawing at this time, Aurora will have sufficient time to meet a Dec. 5 deadline to amend its application.

Based on input from the Mayor’s working group, Denver City Council, City Auditor, and community and business leaders, and after studying a number of reports generated by the Stock Show, Mayor Hancock said remaining a co-applicant would have placed an unrealistic financial burden on the residents of Denver.

“Especially in these tough times, we need to be thoughtful about what we ask from our taxpayers,” Mayor Hancock said. “That is why we are working closely with the Stock Show and all stakeholders to find a solution that benefits the Stock Show, the people, neighborhoods, and businesses of Denver.”

Denver will continue to work with the NWSS as it refines its business plan and explores other options to ensure the Stock Show remains viable for another 106 years.

“We understand how difficult the Mayor’s decision has been to withdraw from the RTA application for this year.  We will continue to work with city officials to find a solution that is in the best interest of the National Western Stock Show and the city,” said Paul Andrews, President and CEO of the National Western Stock Show.
