Mayor Hancock Lauds Governor’s Plan for Colorado’s Mental Health System

DENVER – Mayor Michael B. Hancock today released the following statement lauding Gov. John Hickenlooper’s plan to redesign and strengthen Colorado’s mental health services and support system in the wake of the Aurora theater shooting:

“The tragedies we’ve recently faced as a country illuminate the shortcomings in our system for handling and treating mental illness and substance abuse. I applaud Gov. Hickenlooper and Colorado DHS Executive Director Reggie Bicha for moving expeditiously to better serve the most afflicted among us.

“We must take a comprehensive approach to reducing violence and keeping our residents safe, which includes bolstering our mental health services at every level. Delivering a safer society must also include strengthening our family and neighborhood bonds and fortifying our guns laws.

“What the Governor and Director Bicha have laid out for Colorado is an action plan that allows us to more thoroughly address the mental health needs of many who are falling through the cracks, a critical step in a multipronged approach to keeping our people safe.”
