Denver to host free financial planning day

165 financial planners to offer free advice on budgeting, financial planning, debt management, paying for college, and more

Conventional wisdom says that the economic impact of national conventions is measured in dollars and cents. However, when 2,500 of the nation’s leading financial planners meet in Denver this October, the conference’s economic impact will be measured in a new fashion: through an increased “financial IQ” among Denver residents.

The City and County of Denver is teaming up with the Financial Planning Association (FPA) of Colorado to offer a free day of financial planning, October 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Colorado Convention Center, Korbel Ballroom, 700 14th St. Held in conjunction with FPA’s national conference in Denver, approximately 165 professional financial planners from across the nation will offer free financial planning advice to Denver-area residents.

“The relationship between financial literacy and financial responsibility is more important that ever,” said LaCharles Keesee, executive director of the Denver Office of Economic Development. “It’s critical for individuals across all income levels to be lifelong learners in the area of financial education. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for residents to learn first-hand from the nation’s best and brightest financial planners while they gather in Denver.”

Financial planners will meet one-on-one with attendees to answer questions on budgeting, getting out of debt, income taxes, dealing with mortgage foreclosures, paying for college, estate planning and insurance, among many other topics. Advice will be offered on a “no strings attached” basis and planners will not give out business cards or sell financial products or services.

The event will also feature a series of classroom-style educational workshops addressing key personal finance topics, including credit ratings, household budgeting, and money management in hard times.

Denver Financial Planning Day is organized by the City and County of Denver in partnership with the Financial Planning Association of Colorado as part of a national Financial Planning Days initiative created by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Financial Planning Association, Foundation for Financial Planning and the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The collaboration is a first-of-its kind effort involving city governments and thousands of financial planners nationwide united in an effort to provide free financial education and programming to communities throughout the U.S.

Free online registration for the Denver Financial Planning Day is available at or by calling 877-861-7826. Walk-ins are also welcome.
