Black Walnut Help Center

A disease called Thousand Cankers has been found in Colorado and is proving fatal to all black walnuts infected.  Denver Forestry anticipates that in the coming year or two, many black walnuts begin to look unhealthy and eventually die in Denver.  Below are resources to learn more about the disease, what to do if you receive a notice to remove a black walnut, how to hire a tree care contractor and about re-planting programs.

Thousand Cankers Disease of Walnuts

A healthy black walnut (Juglans nigra)
A black walnut infected with Thousand Cankers disease.

Thousand cankers disease (TCD) is a lethal disease of walnuts in Colorado.  It is caused by a fungus that is carried from tree to tree by the very small walnut twig beetle.  Click here for the full brochure on the TCD.

It is very important that any wood from a tree with TCD not be moved.  Moving the wood can move the disease to healthy trees. It is important to remember that infected walnut wood cannot be stored or transported while the bark is still intact.  All infected wood must be debarked, chipped, buried, or promptly burned.
