Recreation Centers: Youth Flock To Free Programs

If the first month of free recreation is any indication, Denver youth are thrilled to have places to go and things to do this summer! On May 29, Denver Parks & Recreation announced that summer access to its recreation centers and pools would be free for kids. Since then, use of recreation centers surged 200-percent and use of pools increased 54-percent. Mayor John Hickenlooper said, "We couldn't be more excited about these results and what it means for Denver's kids."

This program for Denver youth 17 and younger will continue through August 16.

Forestry: New Resident and Developer Fees to Maintain Trees
City Council approved three new fees June 23 which may be levied against property owners if they do not take care of trees in the public right-of-way adjacent to their property and review/preservation fees for developers building large projects.

Since 1906, the Denver code has required property owners to maintain these trees, but recent concern about the cooperation of some property owners and the impact on the health of the Denver tree canopy prompted the Forestry Division of Denver Parks and Recreation to recommend fines to the City Council.

Property owners will first be given a no-fine notice, but if they ignore the notice for more than 45 days they will be assessed a $150 fine. If later notices are ignored after 14 additional days, the fine increases to $500. A third administrative citation, after 14 more days, could result in a fine of $999. Residents needing assistance with costs may apply to the Forestry Division for an extended payment plan or tree maintenance assistance funded by special federal programs. More on developer fees in the article below.

Greenprint Denver: Donate to Tree Care Programs!
Denver launched the Greenprint Program to plant a million trees in the eight-county area by 2025 and enlisted the TreeBank online donation system so generous tree fans can direct their contributions to their own communities. In addition, Greenprint’s Tree by Tree – Mile High Million campaign will give its first month of TreeBank donations to our neighbors in Windsor to help replant trees lost in the recent tornado (donations made up until July 10, 2008).

Over 68,000 trees have been planted in the first year of this program. Tree by Tree – Mile High Million is supported Suncor, which recently donated $1 million over the next five years to the program.
