DENVER, CO — January 25, 2012 — Due to lack of cooperation from Mother Nature and the unseasonably warm weather, Denver Parks and Recreation and Winter Park Resort announced today that the 2012 Ruby Hill Rail Yard will be cancelled.
January 2012 is shaping up to be one of the warmest in Denver, with very little snow fall during the month. In addition, the daytime temperatures were unseasonably high which doesn’t allow for snowmaking to take place.
“Though we are enjoying this mild winter, we are disappointed we can’t offer this amenity to Denver area youth,” said Lauri Dannemiller, Manager of Denver Parks and Recreation.
Ruby Hill Rail Yard is the nation’s only free urban rail yard. Denver Parks & Recreation and Winter Park Resort team up to create and manage the terrain park and Christy Sports provides free snowboarding and ski equipment. In years past the park opens in January and lasts anywhere from 4 to 7 weeks.
“We look forward to working with the Denver Parks & Recreation crew each year to provide the Denver area residents a free place to ski and ride at Ruby Hill Rail Yard and are disappointed that Denver’s weather is not conducive to make snow,” said Bob Holme, terrain park and youth marketing manager at Winter Park Resort. “We now look to our summer partnership on the Trestle Bike Skills Course at Barnum North Park and to next winter’s Ruby Hill Rail Yard.”
Ruby Hill Park is located off of South Platte River Drive and West Florida Avenue. For more information on Ruby Hill Rail Yard please visit www.denvergov.org/rubyhillrailyard.
