In-custody death after traffic stop

On April 1, 2012, at approximately 9:20 PM, Denver Police Officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of 47th Avenue and Washington Street. Upon contact the suspect became combative and attempted to assault the officer. The suspect was taken into custody after a brief use of force. After being handcuffed the suspect walked to the police car and was placed in the back seat.

A short time later the suspect was observed in what appeared to be medical distress. At this point officers asked that the previously requested ambulance now respond with lights and siren. The suspect was then transported to a local hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later.

This incident is being investigated as an in-custody death by the Denver Police Department, and the Denver District Attorney’s Office. The investigation is being monitored by the Office of the Independent Monitor. The suspect’s information will not be released at this time pending identification and notification by the Office of the Medical Examiner.
