On Sunday, April 01, 2012 at approximately 4:10 AM, the victim, Jimma Reat, age 25, a native of Sudan, along with other family members and a friend were returning home from a family visit. They were driving north on Sheridan Boulevard in a white, 2010 Dodge Charger, rental car. Near W. 10th Avenue, the male occupants of a burgundy colored Jeep Cherokee began following and harassing them. One of the occupants of the Jeep threw a bottle at the rental vehicle, breaking the rear window and one brandished a handgun.
The victim and other family members had stopped their vehicle in the 5100 block of West 29th Avenue and were in contact with police dispatch by telephone when the Jeep Cherokee stopped behind them. An unidentified Hispanic male exited the Jeep Cherokee armed with a handgun. The victim and other family members attempted to flee on foot. The unidentified suspect shot and killed Jimma Reat as he attempted to flee.
