K9 removed from Bomb Detection Unit

On Sunday, April 15th , 2012 at approximately 5 p.m. a off-duty Denver Police Department Canine handler, Tec. Bradley Rhodes, contacted the Arvada Police Department to report that his canine, “Rita”, ran from his yard as he turned to get a leash and attacked and killed a Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix who was being walked by a neighbor. The Arvada Police Department issued a summons to Sergeant Rhodes for Dangerous Dog and Dog Running at Large. The canine, “Rita”, was immediately removed from her training as a Bomb Detection Dog at the Airport. An Internal Affairs investigation has been opened to determine if the actions of Tec. Rhodes violated the Denver Police Department’s Canine Policy.

Tec. Rhodes immediately called the Arvada Police Department after the incident occurred to make the report. Chief Robert White stated, “I very much regret the loss of someone’s pet due to the actions of one of our canines. We send our condolences to the owner of the dog that was attacked.”
