I-25 & 20th Street fatal accident

On April 22, 2012 Denver Police arrested the suspect believed to be involved in the Hit and Run accident that occurred on I-25 in the area of 20th Street earlier this morning. The suspect has been identified as Uriel Lopez-Ramirez (DOB 7/28/91). Lopez-Ramirez was stopped by the Colorado State Patrol while speeding on I-25 near Highway 52. The alert State Trooper recognized the damage to Lopez-Ramirez’s vehicle as being consistent with an auto vs. pedestrian collision. The Trooper contacted the Denver Police Department to see if a recent Auto-Pedestrian accident was being investigated.

Lopez-Ramirez is currently being held in the Denver Jail for investigation of Reckless Driving, Vehicular Homicide, Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Death, and Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

Denver PIO will send out Lopez-Ramirez’s mug shot once he is processed.

Previous Release

On April 22, 2012, at 3:13 a.m. Denver Police received several 911 calls on a man laying on the Highway in the area of I-25 and 20th Street. Officers responded to the scene and found a man down on the Highway with injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. He was pronounce dead at the scene. It appears the victim/pedestrian was attempting to cross the Highway when he was struck by one or more vehicles. The first vehicle that struck the victim did not stop and police are looking for the driver of that vehicle.. No vehicle description is being released at this time.

I-25 Northbound was closed for several hours to complete the investigation.

Denver Police are asking for anyone who was traveling on I-25 in the area of 20th Street between 3:00 a.m. and 3:20 a.m. and has information about this accident to call Traffic Investigations at 720-337-1000.

The victim’s identity will be released by the Office of the Denver Medical Examiner after they have established positive identification and notified next of kin.
