Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and fluorescent tubes are serious energy savers and environmentally preferred. However, while safe and efficient to operate, CFLs and fluorescents tubes contain trace amounts of mercury so when thrown in the trash or broken, they can potentially harm the environment, human health and especially trash collectors. The good news is that fluorescent lights are 100 percent recyclable and safe for public use when disposed of properly.
Denver residents can dispose of their CFLs and fluorescent tubes with their free Household Hazardous Waste collection. Residents should note that in order to make the most effective use of the City’s HHW collection budget, you must have a minimum of three different materials before calling for a pickup. Eligible residents may call (720) 865-6815 to request a collection. Residents are permitted one collection per year not to exceed 125 pounds. If the only household hazardous waste you have to dispose of is CFLs, then simply take them to one of the free CFL recycling drop-off sites listed below.
So be sure to recycle your burned out compact fluorescent light bulbs and help reduce impacts on the environment and prevent inadvertent exposure to hazardous chemical.
