Denver Police Gang Bureau
The Denver Police Gang Bureau objectives are:
- Investigate gang-related and gang motivated crimes
- Enforce City, State and Federal laws as they relate to gang activity.
- Develop and maintain gang related information to help minimize the influence of criminal street gangs within the Denver community.
- Provide community education and awareness as to the dangers and realities of gang membership.
The Denver Police Gang Bureau is assigned to the patrol division, with officers working both day and night shifts, seven days a week. The Gang Bureau was originally formed in 1988 as the Tactical Motorcycle Unit. With the increase of gang activity within the city, it evolved into the Gang Bureau in 1993. With approximately 41 sworn personnel, the Gang Bureau’s primary function is to address gang problems within Denver. The Gang Bureau is also assists with crowd management and control during large-scale events and critical incidents. The Bureau is staffed with detectives, community resource officers, supervisory and command staff, a data analyst and officers assigned to the Metro Gang Task Force.

The Denver Police Gang Bureau seeks to minimize the influence of criminal street gangs in Denver by:
- Identifying and tracking juvenile and adult criminal street gangs, and gang-related crime, as it occurs throughout the City and County of Denver.
- Responding to gang-related and gang-motivated incidents.

Identifying gang members within the City of Denver by identifying gang related tattoos on their person.
- Assisting and supporting the patrol division, investigative division and Metro Gang Task Force in solving gang related crimes
- Fostering a cooperative relationship with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies for the purpose of exchanging credible information about gang related activity.
- Partnerships with community and youth intervention service providers.
- Presenting gang awareness and prevention programs.
The Gang Unit is also tasked with all P.O.W.P.O.- (Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender) investigations resulting from arrests made within the city on a day to day basis involving Firearms, illegal weapons, and any other prohibited items which convicted felons are not allowed to possess.
