2013 Safe Summer Kickoff

DENVER, COMay 31, 2013 – In conjunction with the Southwest Denver Coalition, the Department of Public Safety’s Gang Reduction Initiative of Denver (GRID) and the Office of Drug Strategy’s Denver Resource for Awareness and Prevention program (d-RAP) will host the 2013 Safe Summer Kickoff at Kepner Middle School on Saturday, June 1, 2013 from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM, rain or shine.

The Safe Summer Kickoff is a free, family-friendly event where attendees can learn about community and government support services while they enjoy food, live entertainment, prize drawings and a variety of activities. The event is also an opportunity to connect youth with alternative activities during the summer to keep them busy and safe.

Over 40 private and public community organizations will participate in this year’s Safe Summer Kickoff Resource Fair to provide information on youth services, financial security options, community policing, health and wellness options, voting services, and upcoming neighborhood social activities. Bilingual staff will be available during the event, and announcements will be made in English and Spanish.

“This collaboration between the City and our local partners is vital to ensuring our citizens are informed about support services and resources available in their neighborhoods,” said Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock. “Together, we are taking an active role in strengthening Denver neighborhoods by enriching our sense of community and supporting an environment where everyone in this City knows they matter.”

Festivities at the Safe Summer Kickoff will include a mural unveiling, face painting, poetry reading, games and activities, music, a performance by Lincoln High School ROTC, and free safety kits. Members of the Denver Police, Sheriff and Fire Departments will also attend the Kickoff and Police will operate a “Safety Village” where attendees can ride tricycles and bicycles and learn about bicycle safety.

“This community event is about giving people the information they need to feel safe and supported in their neighborhoods,” said Councilman Paul Lopez. “Whether that’s where to go for affordable dental care or where to go when you need police assistance; it’s all about community support and getting to know the people who care about this City.”

The purpose of the 2013 Safe Summer Kickoff is to build community cohesion while promoting a healthy and safe summer for Denver’s residents. Kepner Middle School is located at 911 S. Hazel Court.
