How the Federal Economic Stimulus Bill Will Help Denver

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (the federal economic stimulus bill) provides a great opportunity for Denver. As you may be aware, Denver will receive some stimulus dollars for critical city projects and programs, but because funding will come from multiple places and on different schedules, we do not yet know how much funding will ultimately be available to us. It may be a year or more before Denver has a final total of funds received as a result of this federal legislation.

Funding may come through several avenues:

  • Direct allocations to the City – Community Development Block Grants
  • Regional distributions from organizations like the Denver Regional Council of Governments
  • The State of Colorado – formula funds, grants and competitive processes (including new energy funds and transportation projects)
  • Federal agencies – Regional Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
