Mayor Hickenlooper unveils 2010 One Book, One Denver selection

DENVER, CO — SEPTEMBER 1, 2010 — Mayor John Hickenlooper and the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs today unveiled the 2010 One Book, One Denver selection, as determined by public vote. This year’s choice is The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Details on a new scavenger hunt, partnerships and associated programming were shared by the Mayor at Denver Public Library’s main branch downtown.

As an ongoing, key collaborator in this program, the Denver Public Library will circulate 1,500 copies of The Help through its system. Almost 600 of those copies have already been reserved by One Book, One Denver enthusiasts.

As this year’s major cash sponsor, McDonald’s is providing 1,164 of the books being circulated through the Denver Public Library system, as well as numerous promotional benefits. They include:

  • Coupon for a FREE medium Frappé or Smoothie on 10,000 One Book, One Denver bookmarks, good through the end of the year
  • Thousands of One Book, One Denver promotional tray liners for use in metro Denver McDonald’s restaurants
  • Participation in the NEW One Book, One Denver Scavenger Hunt

For the new One Book, One Denver Scavenger Hunt, 50 wrapped copies of The Help were placed today in three locations: 16th & Champa McDonald’s, 16th & Cleveland McDonald’s and The Oxford Hotel. The books are wrapped in red wrapping paper with yellow ribbon and a McDonald’s sticker. Denverites are encouraged to visit these locations and find the books. The books are hidden in public spaces throughout each location. There is a limit of one book per person. A sign will be placed outside each location once all books have been found.

In their second year of partnership, The Oxford Hotel will feature a lobby display designed specifically for the 2010 One Book, One Denver by MATTER. In addition, stop by the hotel to receive special offers good at The Oxford Hotel and The Oxford Club, Spa & Salon. Finally, in five of the scavenger hunt books at The Oxford Hotel there will be extra prizes! They include:

  • Three Book Lovers packages, which entitle recipients to a one-night accommodation for two, $20 Tattered Cover Book Store gift certificate, bottle of Pinot Noir and complimentary overnight valet parking
  • Two $100 gift certificates to The Oxford Club, Spa & Salon

A recurring partner, Borders this year is offering a 30% discount on The Help. Additionally, if participants purchase their copy at Borders sometime between Thursday, September 9 and Sunday, September 12, and use coupon code OBOD9912K, a portion of their purchase will be donated back to One Book, One Denver to purchase books in 2011. The offer is also good on purchases at Waldenbooks and Borders.com. Printable coupons are available online at www.denvergov.org/onebook.
