Annual Mulch Giveaway & Compost Sale

Free mulch and discounted compost will be available to Denver residents at Denver Recycles’ annual Mulch Giveaway & Compost Sale.  This event generally takes place the first Saturday in May.  Information on this event locations and times are available after April 1st each year. This event is sponsored by Denver Recycles, a program of Denver Public Works Solid Waste Management section, Denver Parks & Recreation and A1 Organics.

The mulch for this event is made from thousands of Christmas trees and branches.  The trees and branches are ground to make mulch that is perfect for ground cover in your yard.  The supply of Christmas trees comes from residents that recycled their tree in January through Denver’s annual Treecycle program.  Mulch can be used to control weeds, help soil retain moisture and protect shallow-rooted plants from weather extremes.

The compost is produced from the tons of leaves collected in the fall from Denver’s LeafDrop program.  The leaves are then composted over the winter by A1 Organics.  Compost is a soil amendment made from decomposed organic material that can be mixed into soil or spread thinly over lawns to help reduce water and fertilizer needs. The compost sale is a one day only event, however A1 Organic products can be purchased year-round at many local retailers.  Click here for a list of Colorado retailers stocking A1 Organic compost and other products.
