When Maricruz Herrera first moved to the Montbello area six years ago, she wanted to get to know her neighbors. Months later she helped start the neighborhood’s first summer camp for children with little resources and no prior experience. Herrera has been instrumental in providing residents with resources and services, particularly the Latinx immigrant community, which makes up a large portion of Montbello. She serves as the executive director of Colorado Changemakers Collective (Colectiva Creando Cambios en Colorado, in Spanish), a nonprofit based out of her home, that helps connect residents to these free programs. Her goal is to bring more awareness to Montbello’s struggles and triumphs.
