Microsegmentation

Overview
CP Cyber, on behalf of the Auditors Office, conducted a cybersecurity assessment of an agency in the City and County of Denver. This assessment found some areas of strength and some areas that need improvement. Because of the security sensitivities involved with this assessment the findings were communicated to the agency separately. This report gives a general overview of microsegmentation.
About microsegmentation
From businesses to individuals, everyone relies on secure networks to protect sensitive data, personal information, financial transactions, and more. One powerful method of enhancing cybersecurity is microsegmentation, which is a subset of network segmentation.
Microsegmentation is about organizing a network into smaller, more secure sections, rather like ships that have watertight compartments that can be sealed off in case the hull is breached in that section. This approach helps control who has access to various parts of the network, adding an important layer of protection against cyber threats.
Each segment of the network operates independently and is separated by virtual or physical barriers. These barriers restrict the flow of data between them. This controlled separation limits access to critical systems and sensitive data, providing an additional layer of protection against unauthorized access or cyberattacks. By isolating different parts of the network, segmentation helps ensure that, if one section is compromised, the rest of the network remains secure.
