DENVER – Denver Auditor Timothy M O’Brien, CPA, is pleased to accept an appointment to the U.S. Comptroller General’s Advisory Council on Government Auditing Standards where he will share his expertise and help shape future auditing standards for auditors across the country.
“I am grateful to Comptroller General of the United States Gene L. Dodaro for this honor and the opportunity to serve my constituents in Denver by speaking for our processes and priorities,” Auditor O’Brien said.
The advisory council gives input for updates to the Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards, also known as the “Yellowbook.” Denver’s Auditor is required by city charter to follow these standards.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office reached out to Auditor O’Brien to request his “expertise and insight” on the council. According to the office, “The council is intended to foster discussion and collaboration among experts knowledgeable about auditing standards and other subjects critical to conducting high-quality government audits.”
The Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards include “requirements for audit reports, professional qualifications for auditors, and audit organization quality control. Auditors of federal, state, and local government programs use these standards to perform their audits and produce their reports.”
Members of the council serve four-year terms and include experts from federal, state, and local government; the private sector; and academia. Previous council members include former State Auditor Dianne Ray.
Auditor O’Brien has more than 40 years of experience as Denver’s elected auditor, the state auditor, and in public and private organizations. He has participated in hundreds of audits.
