Biography:
Afflicted by polio at the age of five, Boigon grew up in braces and still has a weak right arm. She spent the early part of her career as a teacher in rough areas of Detroit and Washington, D.C. In 1973, she moved to Denver and worked as a reporter for the Sentinel newspapers. She was a senior writer to Governor Roy Romer, communications director for the Colorado Democrat and an aide to Denver Councilwoman Joyce Foster before Mayor Wellington Webb chose her as executive director of the Mayor’s Office for Education and Children. Boigon served two terms in at-large City Council seat before running for mayor in 2011.
