Denver City Council Privacy Policy

Your Privacy Matters to Us

Thank you for wanting to share your thoughts at a Denver City Council meeting or public event. Your privacy matters to us, and we want you to know how we handle your personal information.

What We Ask For and How We Use It

When you sign up to speak at a meeting or submit written testimony, we'll ask for your name, address, phone number, and email. We use this information to manage the meeting and contact you if needed. For example, we might reach out with questions about your sign-up or to notify you of changes in meeting details. Additionally, a City Council member might contact you for a follow-up on your comments.

We won't sell or share your information with anyone else unless required by law, such as in response to a Colorado Open Records Act request while we still possess the information.

What We Keep and What We Don’t:

For Speakers:

If you speak at a meeting or General Public Comment session, your name and face may be recorded on video and included in the public record. Please note that if you verbally share personal information (like your address or phone number) during your comments, it will become part of the public record on the video.

We delete any written personal information (such as email addresses, phone numbers, or addresses) that you provided on the sign-up form within 24 hours. None of that becomes part of the public record.

For Written Testimony:

If you submit written testimony, your personal information such as address, phone number, or email is kept for 24 hours after the meeting in case a Council member wishes to contact you for follow-up.
After that period, your address, phone number, and email are deleted, and only your name and written testimony are included in the public record for the hearing on item you wrote about.

When you sign up to get the Weekly Schedule Summary

When you register to speak or submit written testimony, you can also choose to receive the council’s weekly schedule by email. This schedule provides information about upcoming committee activities, with links for watching live or watching archived videos of meetings. There is also a link for finding and contacting your Council member.

If you sign up for the weekly schedule, you'll receive it each Thursday afternoon at the email address you provided. Occasionally, you might also receive press releases or other important notices about schedule changes. You can unsubscribe from these emails at any time by clicking "unsubscribe" in the email. Your email address will only be used for the emails you signed up for and won't be sold or shared unless required by law.

There's a Small Risk:

We strive to protect your information, but we can't guarantee it won't be accessed without permission, hacked, lost, or breached. By providing your information, you understand and accept these risks. Remember, we only keep your private information for about 24 hours after the meeting.

If You Have Questions:

If you're unsure about this policy or how we handle your personal information, please reach out to us at 720-337-2000 or dencc@denvergov.org. We might update this policy from time to time, and we'll post any changes on our website.
