Denver, August 5, 2026 -- Following the resignation of former At-large Council member Sarah Parady, the Denver City Council today passed a resolution officially declaring the seat vacant, and setting a special election for November 3, to coincide with the General Election. This election will fill the seat for the remainder of the term, which ends in July 2027.

• Residents should continue to call 311 or use the online service, Sunny, at denvergov.org for all city service issues and concerns.

• Residents are encouraged to contact their district's Council member or the other at-large member, Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez, with questions or district concerns. Contact information for all Council members can be found here.

Newly elected Council President Diana Romero Campbell has made new committee assignments effective Tuesday, July 21, 2026.

• All committees meeting the week of July 20, 2026, will operate with the newly chairperson, co-chairs, and members.
• Previously published agendas for this week may still show the former committee roster. Agendas produced from today forward will reflect the updated membership.
• Committee schedules remain unchanged. The Monday–Wednesday meeting slots at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. remain in effect, as do the rotations assigned to those slots.

DENVER, July 20, 2026 — The Denver City Council elected Council member Diana Romero Campbell, who represents Council District 4, as its new president today. Council President Romero Campbell assumed the office immediately after the unanimous vote. Council at-large-member Serena Gonzales-Guterrez was elected president pro tempore.

“I am honored to serve as Denver City Council President and grateful to my colleagues for entrusting me with this leadership position,” Council President Romero Campbell said, “Serving the residents of Denver is the greatest privilege of my career, and I look forward to working with my fellow council members, the mayor, and our community to build a city where every neighborhood thrives and all Denverites feel a sense of belonging.”

The City Council president is responsible for presiding over meetings, ensuring orderly conduct, and maintaining order. They manage the legislative agenda, refer matters to appropriate committees, and serve as a key representative of the Council in interactions with other governmental bodies and the public. Additionally, the president has broad discretion to waive certain procedural rules to facilitate the efficient functioning of the Council. 

The president pro tem acts in the absence of the president, upon the president’s inability to act, or upon the request of the president. In these instances, the president pro tempore presides and has all of the powers and authority of the president.

President Pro Tem Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez said, "I am so thankful for my colleagues’ trust and am excited to step into this role on the Denver City Council. Together we can ensure our Council is rooted in delivering results, working on bold policy to build a city that works for everybody, and uniting in our efforts to create a Denver that belongs to all of us.”

Romero Campbell replaces Council member Amanda P. Sandoval of Council District 1 as president. Sandoval served two, one-year terms.

DENVER – Following its annual budget priorities session this month, the Denver City Council has sent a letter to Mayor Mike Johnston outlining the goals and priorities it would like reflected in his 2027 proposed budget. The goals reflect the Council’s commitment to developing a responsible, community-centered budget amid fiscal constraints. 

“Our job is to ensure the budget reflects the values of Denver residents, even in difficult financial years,” said Council President Amanda P. Sandoval. “This letter represents our shared commitment to thoughtful decision making and to working collaboratively with the mayor’s administration as the 2027 budget takes shape.” 

Council President Pro Tempore Diana Romero Campbell added, “Every Council member cares deeply about the people of Denver. These priorities help ensure that city agencies have the resources they need to deliver the services our communities rely on. We look forward to continued partnership throughout this process.” 

The letter identifies broad areas that will guide the Council’s role throughout the budget process. 

The 2027 budget priorities include the following categories: 

• Community Safety 
• Community Empowerment and Engagement 
• Housing Affordability, Stability, and Homelessness Services 
• Support for Workers and Small Businesses 
• Climate and Environmental Resilience 
• Infrastructure and Mobility Improvements 
• Public and Behavioral Health 
• Restoration of Basic City Services 

The mayor must submit his proposed budget to the Council on or before September 15, as required by the City Charter.
