Denver, Partners Celebrate Affordable Housing Opening in Central Park

Mayor Mike Johnston, Denver’s Department of Housing Stability (HOST), partners from Mile High Development and Brinshore Development, and community members celebrated today the grand opening of Northfield Flats, a 129-unit affordable rental community located adjacent to the Northfield shopping center in the Central Park neighborhood.

“With this development, more than a hundred Denver families will receive the perfect holiday gift: the knowledge that their rent payment will never be out of reach,” said Mayor Mike Johnston. “We’re grateful to the many partners and city employees who made this project a reality and who continue to demonstrate their commitment toward making Denver affordable for all.”

Located at 4545 Xenia St., Northfield Flats offers one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, all of which are income restricted for households earning between 30 and 80 percent of the area median income. The property will remain affordable under a covenant for the next 60 years.

"I'd like to thank the Mayor and the staff of the City and County of Denver for being a great partner from the very first conceptual designs for this project until today, as we cut the ribbon," said George Thorn, CEO of Mile High Development. “I'd also like to thank our co-developer, Brinshore Development, the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority, Key Bank, Fannie Mae, and Brookfield Development, for supporting Northfield Flats with the resources necessary to make this $40 million project a reality for the 200 residents who are just beginning to occupy the building in time for the holidays.”

The four-story community offers easy access to various retail outlets, full-service grocery, employment centers, high-frequency bus lines and the Central Park light rail station. The project will comply with National Green Building Standards with an assortment of sustainable features incorporated in the overall building design. Amenities include a community room, fitness center, and in unit washers and dryers.

HOST provided $4,515,000 from the Affordable Housing Fund to help make the development possible. Other public finance partners include the Colorado Department of Local Affairs and the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority.

Northfield Flats adds affordable units that are critically needed in Denver. A total of 1,620 affordable units that have received city financing are currently under construction/preservation at 24 sites throughout Denver. An additional 738 income-restricted units are in the planning stage. Learn more about this inventory at the Denver Affordable Housing Dashboard.
