Denver Resumes Bridge Work on Speer Boulevard to keep City Infrastructure in State of Good Repair
DENVER — A contractor for the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) will start preventive maintenance work this week on a bridge along Speer Boulevard north of downtown, ensuring it provides a smooth and safe ride and also supports the traveling public for years to come.
Denver completed preventive maintenance on two other Speer Blvd bridges last year – one over the South Platte River and one over Little Raven Street. Crews paused for the winter and are now addressing the third and final bridge over the railroad tracks (see attached map).
Starting this week, drivers should anticipate double right lane closures on northbound Speer Blvd between I-25 and Auraria Pkwy and, after the NBA/NHL season, double right lane closures on southbound Speer. In mid to late summer, after work is complete in the right lanes, work will shift to the left lanes and drivers should anticipate double left lane closures on northbound and southbound Speer between I-25 and Auraria Pkwy into fall. At least two travel lanes will remain open in each direction for the duration of the project, anticipated to wrap up in late fall 2024.
Work on the bridge over the railroad tracks includes roto milling and overlaying fresh asphalt over the bridge, removal and replacement of bridge deck waterproofing membrane, bridge deck repairs, removal and replacement of bridge expansion joints, backwall repairs and final striping.
Message boards will be in place to alert drivers. Sidewalk closures will route people to the Cherry Creek Trail as needed. The public’s patience and cooperation are appreciated as this work is critical to keeping our city bridge infrastructure strong and resilient.
