Denver Moves: Broadway is part of the voter-approved Elevate Denver Bond Program and aligns with Mayor Michael B. Hancock’s Mobility Action Plan to provide Denverites with better and safer transportation choices.
This high-comfort bikeway will provide a significant new north-south connection in Denver’s growing bike network. It will enhance access to local businesses, neighborhoods and other destinations, as well as improve safety for all travelers with upgraded pedestrian crossings, streetscaping, street trees, public art and more, including:
- New two-way protected bikeway on Broadway will use concrete curbs and a row of parking to separate people on bikes from people in cars and will connect the Cherry Creek Trail to Center Avenue and RTD’s Broadway station.
- Curb ramp and sidewalk reconstruction will be made at intersections and other locations along the corridor to provide additional safety and comfort for people walking along Broadway.
- Streetscaping will be enhanced by improving the landscape areas and growing conditions for street trees.
- Multimodal improvements will provide better access to bus stops, shorter intersection crossings and improved accessibility for walkers and wheelers alike.
- Wayfinding signage will be provided to help guide people to multimodal connections along the corridor.
- Public art locations have been identified for areas along the corridor to complement Broadway’s unique character.
- Infrastructure improvements such us reconstructed traffic signals and upgraded drainage.

Current Status
The project team has completed the South Broadway Bikeway design process, and construction procurement has begun. Construction is expected to begin in late 2022.
Travel Impacts for the week of May 29, 2023:
Work the week of May 29 will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. There will be no operations Monday for Memorial Day weekend. Some closures will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and others will be 24/7 closures. Please see upcoming travel impacts below:
For drivers:
- 24/7 double right lane closure on southbound Broadway between 1st Avenue and Archer Place. 8th Avenue to 3rd Avenue will also experience a 24/7 double left lane closure.
- 24/7 full closure on the east side of Center Avenue from Broadway to Lincoln.
- 24/7 closure on the west side of Archer Place and Broadway.
- 24/7 closure of the east side of Cedar Avenue and Broadway. The alley between Broadway and Lincoln will remain open.
- 24/7 closure on the east side of 4th Avenue and Broadway intersection. This is anticipated to reopen on Tuesday, May 30.
- 24/7 closure of the eastbound lane at the east 7th Avenue and Broadway intersection. Business access will remain open on Lincoln only.
- Parking spots may be limited in these sections of roadway, so we ask motorists to park on the side streets when available.
- The project team does not anticipate major delays with traffic but travelers are encouraged to account for extra travel time. Please use extreme caution while driving through the work zone. Slow down, leave plenty of space between vehicles, and watch for workers and equipment.
For other modes of travel:
- All bus stops in the project zone are currently open.
- The bike lane will be closed on east Broadway from Maple Avenue to Beyers Place during the Cedar Avenue closure. Riders are encouraged to follow designated bike lanes east on Bayaud Avenue, south on Washington Street, and west at Virginia Avenue to connect back on Broadway. Or, dismount and walk around the closure in the designated pedestrian walkways.
- The southeast corner of the 6th Avenue and Broadway intersection will be closed to pedestrians. Pedestrians will be detoured to either the 5th Avenue or Lincoln Street crosswalks as alternatives.
- 24/7 closure of the east Cedar Avenue crosswalks.
- 24/7 full closure of the northwest Archer Place crosswalk.
- 24/7 closure of the east Center Avenue crosswalks.
- 24/7 closure of the east 4th Avenue crosswalks. This is anticipated to reopen on Tuesday, May 30.
- 24/7 closure of the east 7th Avenue crosswalks.
- Business and residential access will remain open at all times. This includes parking lot, alleyway and driveway access.

Additional Updates:
- 4th Avenue was poured with new concrete on Monday, May 22 and will reopen to pedestrian and vehicle travel on Tuesday, May 30.
- The 7th Avenue curb ramp and median was poured with new concrete on Thursday, May 25.
- A new pedestrian closure will take effect at E 6th Avenue starting next week.
- Construction on the highly anticipated protected bike lane is expected to start this summer.
Project Timeline
Construction began October 7, 2022 and will last 12-18 months.
- Phase 1: Start Fall 2022 - Winter 2023. The west side of Broadway will undergo enhancements to 16 intersections from 7th Avenue to Center Avenue.
- Phase 2: Spring 2023 - Summer 2023. The east side of Broadway will undergo enhancements to 16 intersections from 7th Avenue to Center Avenue.
- Phase 3: Summer 2023 - Complete Fall 2023. Final landscaping plantings and permanent striping will take place on Broadway from 7th Avenue to Center Avenue.

Travel Impacts
- Work is anticipated to take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Intermittent lane and shoulder closures will be in place throughout S. Broadway for the next year
- Bus routes may be affected by lane closures
- Traffic shifts on S. Broadway will occur to maintain safety to motorists and construction crews
- Business access will be maintained during the project
- There will be intermittent sidewalk closures with detours in place
For Residents
What To Expect During Construction
- Residential street access will remain open for the duration of the project, however some driveways may be temporarily reduced to a single lane.
- Sidewalks will be closed intermittently with detours. There will be at least 4-foot minimum access on all sidewalks.
- Parking on Broadway will be reduced in certain areas during construction of the bike lane, so we encourage residents and visitors to park on nearby side streets.
- We know it's tough, but expect some noise during working hours between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- There will be possible night work to remove and replace mast arms at intersections.
- Residents will be given ample warning prior to this occurring.
- Stay in touch with your neighborhood associations for upcoming project events and resources available to you throughout construction.
- As part of the Broadway community, try to support your local businesses during construction.

For Bikers and Commuters
What To Expect During Construction
- Bike routes will change along Broadway throughout the course of the project.
- During Phase 1 of the project (Fall 2022-Winter 2023), bikers will be able to use the existing bike lane on the east side of the road.
- During Phase 2 (Spring-Summer 2023), bike lanes will be moved to the through-lanes of traffic on the west side of Broadway.
- For Phase 3 (Summer-Fall 2023), bikers will be able to utilize the new bike lane.
- For those walking to and from work, sidewalks will be closed intermittently with detours. There will be at least 4-foot minimum access on sidewalks at all times.
- The bus lane on Broadway will be impacted while construction takes place on the bike lane. Bus routes may be changed by several blocks to accommodate lane and shoulder closures. RTD Denver will post updated schedules and notify of changes in stops.
- We encourage commuters and bikers to account for some extra travel time, especially as the project starts to get familiar with route changes.

Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) has been working to improve travel options for people who work, live, play and commute along the Broadway corridor.
As a first step toward implementing recommendations, the City installed a temporary bikeway between Bayaud Avenue and Virginia Avenue. The installation of this pilot facility enabled the operational evaluation of a bikeway and other mobility changes before making major infrastructure investments along the larger corridor.

The project team has been coordinating closely with the South Central Community Transportation Network, the I-25 & Broadway Interchange Multimodal, and Lincoln Transit Improvements projects to provide additional safety features and smoother connections to the neighborhoods, local businesses, and RTD’s Broadway Station.

DOTI has also been working concurrently with neighborhoods within and surrounding the Denver Moves: Broadway project area to build safer and more efficient walking, biking and transit connections in South Central Denver to get people where they need to go.

Lincoln Transit Improvements
Following initial transit improvements along the Broadway/Lincoln corridor, Denver's Department of Transportation and Infrastructure plans to extend transit-only lane hours on South Lincoln Street. During the planning phase, the project team is seeking input from the community on the preferred alternative for Lincoln from I-25 to 7th Avenue.
